friday

So this is Phoenix Wright and Vash from Trigun meeting randomly in a bar (which I would draw in more detail if it wasnt the middle of the night). I think they'd have a lot in common. here they're complaining about the crazy women that follow them. heh heh heh.
if you guys have no idea what I am talking about, you can either ignore this post or you could go watch Trigun and then play the Phoenix Wright series on the Nintendo DS.
wheeeeeeeee.

thursday

Posting this way early because I am going out tonight! hot diggity.
This is John Candy, Canadian actor and comedyman. You can see him in Space Balls, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Cool Runnings, and plenty of other big films. This is drawn from a still of the movie Uncle Buck, which I liked a lot. He was among the coolest of dudes. RIP, John.

wednesday

silly dragons.
awww. :)

tuesday

might have made more sense to just use a photo and copy/paste some hairstyles on there. OH WELL.
nobody panic, though. I think about changing my hair a lot and never seem to actually do it. not sure I could pull off a bob anyway.

monday

I should spend even MORE time on these. then they might look the way I intended them to? also, is it narcissistic to put myself into nearly everything I draw? seriously, most of this stuff is drawings of myself. what. :/ (this was not originally going to have me in it. it was going to have some anonymous gallavanting adventure-seeker. oy.)

TGIF

this did not happen but might as well have happened. I like spamming with j's cause they are so slim and fit together really tight. unlike say, a w or g.
jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj.

Thursday

it's not only a Canadian Celebrity this week, it's a Newfoundland celebrity. Ryan Snoddon does the weather portion of the CBC evening news in this province, and since he arrived to pick up after Carl Wells, he's been doing a really great job. Personable, knows what he's talking about, has a kind of fun relationship with the two news anchors, Debbie and Jonathan, looks eerily similar to my younger brother.....
Anyway, I just think he's a cool dude. while looking for a photo for this drawing I found his fanclub on facebook. wheee. (maybe I will post this drawing there? WHO KNOWS.)

WedNesDay.

so sometimes if I am stressed out or upset or feeling at all unwell, I wish I could go to a place like this. with just soft grey and soft lighting. no noises, or maybe just a hum. I guess it'd be a kind of detox. umm. I hope someday I can see a Rothko painting.
that is all. take care, guys.

tuesday

I should find a small portable mirror. too bad I smashed that nice rectangle one with the stand on the back. whoops!
maybe I should replace those two burned out lightbulbs in the ceiling too.
it has been a long day, my friends. take care.

monday

This is Cale from the movie Titan AE. I sorta made him look like Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford during the making of these doodles. I'm trying to see if I can adapt to working with someone else's characters and still make them look like they should.
not all that easy for me... I rarely draw the same thing twice. it's hard to get things/people to look like the same thing/person in multiple drawings. hmm.

Friday

feeling semi-inspired by looking at other internet art-heads. I'm really impressed by the drawings and colouring in this comic, and found the artist's art journal where she's been very productive indeed. she's got this very velvety smooth and polished style that is quite nice. seems kind of like candy when compared to paintings and "fine art" though. I'm not sure whether it's wholesome? perhaps it will depend on the story that comes out of the webcomic.
a lot of webcomics I read (I'm pretty much trying to read everything) are sort of shallow. there's little breadth of exploration in the story or in the artistic style, and the plots can sometimes get your mind caught up in things that are actually really petty when you stand back from them. drama is attractive, of course, so of course there will be stories centreing on it. heck, I'll still read all of them because I enjoy reading about social interaction. bleh. not quite sure how to say what I am trying to say.
I first started noticing the fine art/commercial art divide when I was on DeviantArt in 2004, and started my degree. there was such a HUGE difference between what was acceptable at school and what was praised on the Deviantart website, and I was sort of put out in a way. I started to figure out "the difference" though. that being that people on the popular art website didnt want to think too hard about what they were drawing/creating/photographing. (not true for all users, but for many.) a lot of it was self-centred, or overdramatic, or indulgent. nothing really needed to be justified beyond being cute or pretty or that solemn gothy type of pretty. at school, however, we had to justify everything, branch out in new and sometimes painful directions, and we had to do it without a fan club. profs would be pleased with pieces that we would rather burn and throw out. we had to get bad again before we could get better. art school and DeviantArt was a strange set of opposites which I indulged until around 2006. don't get me wrong though, there are some great artists and great community ideas kicking around on that site, but it's no longer where I go to drool over the artwork.
I tried not to sound too opinionated in this entry, but if I do sound a bit coarse, please keep in mind this is just my opinion. I have a hard time writing this kind of stuff because there's so many exceptions to my opinions. hopefully one of you understands what I am saying, and perhaps even agrees with some of it. if not, tell me so. I wonder if anyone will read this. <_<
cheers, guys and gals.

Thursdayz

Canadian celebrity KATE BEATON. she's just awesome as awesome can be. you can find her witty webcomic at www.harkavagrant.com. She's a pretty shy woman, so it's difficult to find a clear photo of her, but I took my reference from a photo of her with a fan, found at this person's flickr. She originates from Nova Scotia and currently lives in... Toronto? I think? anyway. she's a pretty cute person, it seems.

Wednesdayz

I've been spending about an hour or less on daily drawings since I got home. that's not sooo bad, but it doesnt really leave me much room for really "refined" work. then again, I was never much good at refining my work and VA degree never really encouraged it. they wanted the raw experimentation, not the polished product.

another friday.

.... yep. that's a travel guide to England, for the record.
I spend a lot of time waiting to be somewhere else.
as excited as I am for the Harlow students out there this year, it's also making me miss the place a lot.
anyway, have a good weekend people.

another Thursday!

Roberta Bondar was the first female Canadian astronaut. when I was a kid I looked up to her since she was a woman scholar who made it to space. that's basically the best you can do in life. when looking for a reference picture for this (which can be found here) I learned that she was a neurobiologist and a photographer, with her own book of photography out. she is also still oot and aboot in her home province of Ontario, doing sciency stuff as seen in this video of her giving a keynote address at an Ontario environment conference last year.

going to bed now.

another Monday

it's an alien lady. check her OUT. I think perhaps she is mildly alarmed about something.

Among the coolest of dudes, Mister Jay Ingram. He is a tv and radio (and book, and convention, etc) science personality, and he just rocks. He is my Canadian Celebrity for this week, making up for yesterday.

Thursdaisy

I was going to do a celebrity portrait, but I'm just not up for it...
I apologise to anyone who's watching this blog, since lately I havent been doing good work really, and it's not likely to improve all that soon. my situation right now is emotionally and often physically exhausting, and I'm not going to apologise for lackluster drawings it every day, even though I tend to want to. so there it is.
anyway here is a photo of me wishing I were in Halifax with my boyfriend. I coloured it. yay. :/
