Character Design class Lineup

Our final project for our character design class was to draw each of our characters in a lineup together, to show their size relationships. BUT there was a twist. We also had to pick a theme and give them costumes and accessories for that theme. I picked African Safari Adventure! I'll include all the individual drawings below the cut so you can see them better. Enjoy!

Final Animation

This was my final animation project for Timing Techniques class! Animate a wave, then a boat being tossed around by the wave, then a person in the boat. I wish I had more time to spend on it but it also feels good to be finished for a little while. (:

Caricature Practice

I don't really think caricature is for me, but here's a couple of profile portraits I did while we were talking about how to draw caricatures with our instructor Tara. These are two of my classmates, Colin and Erika!

"Exploring the World" - Accidental Art

Here's a few of the projects from the book How to be an Explorer of the World, which we were asked to do in one of our classes. Basically you are supposed to go out into the world and observe new things, do new things, and notice all the things you wouldn't normally see. Observation, categorization, and creation are the goals here.

Animal sketches

Did these while trying to nail down my mixed animal creature in that last project!

2 Legged Creature and 4 Legged Animal

More stuff for Character Design class! This time we were creating animal creatures for future projects. One is a 4 legged animal walk that we will be doing next term, and the other is a mix of two animals that is meant to be a bit monstrous, and we will be animating them walking on their two hind legs I think.
Anyhow, here they are! I'll be posting some of the animal studies I did for this project soon I think.

Goats are awesome

I thought I'd share a page from my sketchbook that I drew while procrastinating from drawing what I needed to draw.
Goats, man. Goats.

October-November animations

We did a spooky light object falling animation, where I drew a light piece of paper in a witches hut.
I just now finished this wave action animation, where we animated an object (some seaweed) moving fluidly as its affected by atmospheric forces (ocean water).

Updated animations from September and October

Updated with better timing! The cannonball one is meant for us to learn how to make an object feel heavy by the acceleration at which it falls and how it affects whatever it falls on.

Windsor McCay

We were asked to create a piece of artwork inspired by the art of Windsor McCay, the father of animation. Here's mine! I really liked making it.
Here are a couple of his videos: a gross one about a mosquito http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvzAJouHh7kand this one about a bad dream about a flying house! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obnRKhgRFXA
He was a very very fast sketch artist and did his work before any modern methods of animating had been invented.

This is my bouncing ball animation from a couple of weeks ago! Might still revise the first bounce on the way in to make it shorter.

Hero and Villain Assignment

For this assignment we were to make a Hero and Villain pair. I tried making two women working in space, one of whom is ex-military with a vendetta to kill a giant space whale, and the other a young girl who took on a job as advisor to the captain for handling dangerous deep space organisms. The young girl is Clair, she has to report back to Earth or space HQ or something (not everything is nailed down yet) on whether this whale needs to be preserved or destroyed. The older woman is Captain Annette, who has lost family to this dangerous space whale thing and pretty much would kill herself and her crew just to get a swing at it.

I want to update you guys on some of the schoolwork I've been doing! The thing I was most excited for was actually animating moving things, so I'll start with that. Our first assignment in our Timing Techniques class was to animate a swinging pendulum. We needed to learn to show things slowing to a stop and reversing direction, and how to make things slow down or speeding up and still look natural.

For now this looks a bit dark, but as we get into more polished animations it'll look clearer, I promise. ;)

Draw your Muse assignment

This is my first shot at the project where we draw what our creative muse looks like. This is Memoria, she's actually one of the original muses from ancient Greece, sort of a lesser spirit. She takes up residence in different people at different times. The few times when she has been without a person to inhabit as a muse, she's been mistaken for a ghost. With me she has spent a lot of time sleeping, during times in my life when I didn't draw much. Because she's so old she has seen a lot and has a lot of creative potential but she's not always cooperative. She kind of falls asleep a lot.

Shapes Challenge

Done for our character design class! We had to take some shapes given to us by Tara and work within them to make characters. Check out Tara's Drawing Jam next week to see what the other students did with the shapes.

Update!

Hello ladies, gentlemen, and bots. I'm going to resurrect this blog as a drawing blog, but probably not as a daily sketch blog. I've started at the NBCC animation program and this will be a place for me to show my work and hear from my classmates, other animators, and everyone else!
To my classmates, beyond this post are about 200 days worth of weekday drawings from 2009-2010. Some of them are pretty good, some of them are terrible. This tag might be of interest?
EDIT: This one too!
